the Artist
Jean Francis’ art is influenced by her relationship with the Owen Sound area and the stories of the Great Lakes and their once bustling ports.
My fascination with the demolition of old warehouses and foundries, Owen Sound harbour with the Lakers that frequent, the elevators, alleyways and urban landscape inform the paintings along with what is in front of me.
The work is abstract expressionist, oil on canvas or board. As a contemporary painter,
I am challenged to develop my own language and trust that I communicate to the viewer a sense of beauty, rawness and excitement that I find in my subject.
I have been painting professionally since the mid-1990’s. Owen Sound is my home where I live and paint in my studio/loft on the inner harbour.
The experience comes first. I paint from that experience.
